Understanding USA voice number features
US voice numbers on Infobip support two additional features: Calling Name Delivery Service (CNAM) and Emergency Calling Services (E.911). These are required for outbound caller ID display and compliance with emergency calling regulations.
Prerequisites
- Active Infobip account with Voice channel enabled
- At least one US voice number configured (Virtual long number or 10DLC)
- For E.911: Valid physical address (not a P.O. box) for emergency routing
Calling name delivery service (CNAM)
Calling Name Delivery Service (CNAM) is available for Infobip USA voice numbers. It supports two modes.
| Mode | Direction | What it does | Additional charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| CNAM Storage | Outbound | Shows your business name to the people you call | No |
| CNAM Delivery | Inbound | Shows the caller's name when someone calls your number | Yes |
CNAM Storage [#cnam-storage-calling-name-delivery-service-cnam]
CNAM Storage lets you associate a calling name with your Infobip voice number. When you make outbound calls, recipients see your business name instead of a phone number. For example, they see "Customer Support Team" instead of "+1-555-0123".
Requirements for CNAM display:
- The recipient's phone and network must support CNAM (Caller ID with Name)
- The recipient's carrier must have CNAM enabled
- Some carriers charge extra for CNAM or include it in specific plans
CNAM Delivery [#cnam-delivery-calling-name-delivery-service-cnam]
CNAM Delivery lets you see the caller's name when someone calls your Infobip voice number (additional charge applies). CNAM data is available through the following integrations.
| Integration | Where CNAM appears |
|---|---|
| Calls API | callReceived event |
| SIP trunks forwarded through Call routing | From header as CNAM <sip:from_phone_number@1.2.3.4:5060> |
Emergency Calling Services (E.911)
Emergency Calling Services (E.911) lets you associate a verified physical address with your Infobip USA voice number. When a call reaches 911 from a properly configured number, it routes to the closest PSAP (Public Safety Answering Point) based on your registered address.
A mandatory penalty fee applies for 911 calls from USA numbers not configured with E.911. Configure E.911 with a valid physical address (not a P.O. box) and complete address verification to avoid penalties.
Configure CNAM and E.911
You can configure CNAM Storage, CNAM Delivery, and E.911 using the web interface or the Numbers API.
- Go to Channels and Numbers > Numbers.
- Select your US voice number.
- Select the Voice tab.
- In the Country specific configuration section, activate CNAM or E.911.
For CNAM: A window prompts you to choose CNAM delivery or storage. For storage, define the calling name your customers see.
For E.911: Enter your physical address for emergency routing. Complete address verification to ensure 911 calls route correctly.
| Feature | Endpoint | Operations |
|---|---|---|
| CNAM | /numbers/2/numbers/{numberKey}/voice/cnam | GET, create, update, delete |
| Emergency service address | /numbers/2/numbers/{numberKey}/voice/emergency-service | Validate and manage |
